Grimstad is a coastal town in Agder, on Norway's southern Skagerrak shore. Its old centre wraps around a sheltered inner harbour. Narrow lanes of white-painted wooden houses climb the rocky ground behind the quays. On a map the town is a tight knot of streets pressed between the hills and the water.
Offshore, the coast breaks into islands, skerries and inlets, and these give the poster its most striking shapes. In the age of sail Grimstad was a notable shipbuilding and shipping town, and the harbour was its reason for being. The bays around the town still mark exactly where the land ends and the sea begins.
