Guisa lies in Granma Province in eastern Cuba, south of Bayamo, where the plains begin to climb into the foothills of the Sierra Maestra. From above the town is small and closely built, with streets that adapt to uneven ground rather than stretching into a perfectly flat grid. Beyond the edges, the landscape turns rural and hilly quickly.
The centre keeps a roughly rectangular arrangement, but the pattern bends and breaks where slopes and streams intervene. Roads lead north toward Bayamo and into the mountains to the south. Guisa has a prominent place in modern Cuban history. In late 1958 it was the site of the Battle of Guisa, one of the final engagements of the revolution, fought by rebel forces led by Fidel Castro.
