Halluin is at the northern tip of the Lille metropolitan area, where the Lys river forms the border between France and Belgium. On the map, the river runs along the north of the town, with Menen on the opposite bank, and the two street networks almost meet at the bridges. Halluin itself spreads south from the water in a dense grid of terraced streets.
The town grew around textile mills in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the long rows of workers' housing still shape much of its plan. Brick streets run close and parallel, broken by the footprints of former factories, some now redeveloped. The Lys, once busy with industry, is lined today with quays and green paths.
