Harringay is best known on the map for one striking pattern. Between Green Lanes and the railway to the west, a series of long, parallel residential streets run side by side. Roads at each end join them, so the whole area looks like a ladder. Locals simply call it the Ladder, and it is one of the most recognisable street layouts in London.
Most of the terraces were built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as the area was developed for London's growing population. Green Lanes is the commercial spine, known for its Turkish and Kurdish restaurants, bakeries and grocers. Finsbury Park lies just to the south, a large green space at the foot of the neighbourhood.
