Harstad lies on the northeastern coast of Hinnøya, the largest island along the Norwegian coast. On a map, the town is a strip of streets pressed between the Vågsfjorden and the steep ground behind. The harbour is at the centre, with quays and piers reaching into the water. Residential streets climb the slope in terraces and fan out along the shore in both directions.
North of the centre is Trondenes, with its medieval stone church, often described as the northernmost medieval church of its kind still in use, and nearby wartime coastal gun batteries. Harstad is also home to the Festival of Northern Norway, an arts festival held each summer. The town has long relied on its harbour and has strong links to the offshore and maritime sectors.
