Harūr is in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu, in the dry upland country between the Eastern Ghats and the plains further south. The town grew along its main roads. On the map its dense centre of narrow streets and small blocks spreads outward along the highways, while newer residential areas fill the spaces between them in a looser pattern.
The landscape around Harūr is broken by granite hills and ridges that rise out of the farmland. Around the town, irrigation tanks, the shallow reservoirs typical of the region, appear as small, rounded bodies of water.
