Ḩattā sits in the Hajar Mountains, an exclave of the emirate of Dubai close to the border with Oman. From above it looks nothing like the coastal city it belongs to. Instead of a grid of towers there are dry riverbeds, scattered farms and short roads that bend to follow the ground. The mountains press close on every side, so the settlement fills whatever flat land the valleys leave.
The best-known feature on the map is Hatta Dam, whose reservoir sits among the rocky slopes as a sharp, irregular shape. Nearby, the heritage village keeps the older stone-and-mud layout of the settlement, with its fort and watchtowers set on higher ground. Around them, the newer streets spread out in loose loops rather than straight lines, following the valleys instead of cutting across them.
A Ḩattā map poster shows a side of the Emirates that many people never see: a place shaped by mountains rather than sea. In black and white the wadis read as fine branching lines, the reservoir becomes a single solid form, and the road that climbs in from the coast is easy to trace.
