Heróica Zitácuaro lies in eastern Michoacán, in a mountain valley surrounded by pine-covered hills close to the border with the State of Mexico. From above, the town forms a compact grid around its central plaza, with streets bending where the terrain rises. Rivers and ravines cut through the surrounding slopes, and the roads out of town climb steadily into the highlands.
The title Heróica recalls the town's role in Mexico's wars. In 1811 it hosted the Supreme National American Junta, one of the first governing bodies formed during the struggle for independence, and it later resisted foreign forces during the French intervention. Today Zitácuaro is also a gateway to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, where millions of butterflies spend the winter in the forests.
