Hınıs is a district town in Erzurum Province, high on the plateau of eastern Anatolia. It sits on a wide plain surrounded by mountains, and from above the streets spread across fairly open ground instead of climbing steep slopes. The town is compact, with a central area of denser streets and roads leading off toward villages across the plain.
The climate here is continental and the winters are long and cold, which is typical of the high Erzurum region. The countryside around the town is mostly farmland and pasture. On a black-and-white map it stays largely blank, and the town's modest street network stands out against that emptiness.
