Rize is defined by a lack of space. The Pontic Mountains rise almost directly behind the shore, so the city stretches along a thin coastal strip, with streets climbing up the valleys wherever the slopes allow. On a map this produces a long, ribbon-like shape, with dense blocks near the water and roads winding uphill in tight bends.
The coastal highway runs along the edge of the sea, sometimes on reclaimed land, separating the city from the Black Sea shoreline. Just east of town, the Rize–Artvin Airport was built on a platform reclaimed from the sea, one of the more unusual shapes you will find on any Rize map poster.
The hillsides above the city are covered in tea gardens, and Rize is known across Turkey as the centre of the country's tea production. None of that green appears on a monochrome print, but the pattern of small roads threading through the slopes hints at it: this is a landscape worked by hand, terrace by terrace.
