Trabzon is squeezed between the Black Sea and the mountains. The city stretches along the coast in a long, narrow band, with a coastal highway and reclaimed land separating it from the water. Behind it, streets climb steeply into the hills, and deep valleys cut down towards the sea. Boztepe hill rises directly above the centre.
As Trebizond, the city was capital of an empire that outlasted Byzantium by several years. Its thirteenth-century Hagia Sophia still stands near the western shore. The pedestrian street Uzun Sokak runs through the old commercial centre. Inland, in the mountains, the Sumela Monastery clings to a cliff face and draws visitors from all over the country.
