Sivas stands at roughly 1,280 metres on the central Anatolian plateau, on a broad plain beside the Kızılırmak, Turkey's longest river. The old centre is compact, with streets meeting around its Seljuk monuments. Later housing districts extend outward in straighter, more regular blocks towards the surrounding hills and farmland.
The city's medieval stone buildings are among the best known in Anatolia. The Gök Medrese and the Çifte Minareli Medrese both date from the thirteenth century. Further out in the province stands the Divriği Great Mosque and Hospital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together they reflect a long period when Sivas was a major stop on caravan routes.
Modern Turkish history also passes through here: the Sivas Congress of 1919 met in the city during the early independence movement.
