Amasya lies in northern Anatolia, in a steep, narrow valley cut by the Yeşilırmak River. The map is long and thin, following the river as it curves between high rock walls. Streets line both banks and are linked by bridges, and the town climbs as far up the slopes as the terrain allows. Few cities in Turkey have a shape so completely set by their landscape.
The cliffs of Mount Harşena above the north bank hold the rock-cut tombs of the kings of Pontus, carved more than two thousand years ago, and a citadel crowns the ridge. Below them, restored Ottoman wooden houses line the riverbank. Amasya was the birthplace of the geographer Strabo. In the Ottoman period, young princes were sent here to learn to govern.
Mosques, madrasas and bathhouses from the Seljuk and Ottoman eras are spread along the valley floor, many of them close to the river. An Amasya map poster captures the drama of this setting. The city follows a single river through a gorge, with cliffs and hills pressing in on both sides.

The tombs of the Pontic kings are cut into the cliffs above the north bank. They overlook the river and the old houses below.

Several bridges cross the river within a short distance. They link the two banks and add short, sharp lines across the long curve of the water.
