Çorum sits on the high plateau of north-central Anatolia, in a broad valley surrounded by farmland and low hills. On a map, the city has a clear core around the old centre and its clock tower. Main avenues lead out from there, and newer residential districts form more regular blocks as they spread across the flatter ground to the edges.
The province is the heartland of the ancient Hittites. Hattusa, their capital and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies within Çorum province, as do other important Hittite sites, and the city museum holds many finds from them.
