Hofheim am Taunus lies where the Taunus hills meet the flatter Main valley, west of Frankfurt. It is the administrative seat of the Main-Taunus district. The map shows two landscapes side by side. To the north, forest and contour-shaped roads climb into the hills. To the south, housing and roads spread out towards the valley and the busy transport corridors near Frankfurt.
At the centre is the old town, a small oval of crooked lanes lined with half-timbered houses. It sits along the Schwarzbach stream. Directly above it rises the Kapellenberg, a wooded hill crossed by footpaths and topped by the Meisterturm lookout tower. Later neighbourhoods have grown outwards in rings, and villages that joined the town sit apart as separate clusters.
