Houndé lies in western Burkina Faso, in the Hauts-Bassins region, on the main road linking Bobo-Dioulasso with Ouagadougou. From above, the town is a broad, largely rectilinear pattern of streets and compound blocks. The highway cuts straight through it, and the built-up area fades into open savanna, farmland and scattered trees on every side.
The area is known for cotton farming and, more recently, for gold mining, which has brought new growth to the town and its outskirts. On the map, that growth shows up as fresh blocks laid out at the edges. Their regular geometry often contrasts with the looser layout of the quarters closer to the centre.
