Hūn is the administrative centre of the Al Jufrah district, in the middle of Libya. It is one of a small group of oasis settlements that includes Waddan and Sokna. From above, the town is a patch of streets and cultivated plots set down in a wide, nearly empty landscape. Palm gardens and irrigated fields form a green margin around the built-up area.
The older part of Hūn was built of mud brick, and traces of its tight, inward-looking layout remain beside the newer rectilinear blocks. On a map the two patterns sit next to each other. One is compact and irregular, shaped by heat and shade. The other is straighter and more spacious, laid out for cars and administration.
