Ieper, known in English as Ypres, lies in West Flanders close to the French border. Its historic centre is enclosed by ramparts and a moat, shaped by Vauban's fortifications in the seventeenth century, and the outline is still clear on the map. Inside, streets lead toward the Grote Markt. Outside the walls, the town spreads into a canal, suburbs and farmland.
The town was one of the great cloth-trading cities of medieval Flanders, and its Cloth Hall recalls that period. During the First World War Ieper lay at the centre of a salient and was almost completely destroyed, then rebuilt over the following decades. The Menin Gate memorial lists tens of thousands of missing soldiers, and the Last Post is sounded there every evening.

Set into the eastern ramparts, where the road toward Menen leaves town, the Menin Gate marks the edge between the old centre and the landscape of the former front.
