Igualada lies in the interior of Catalonia, about sixty kilometres west of Barcelona, and is the capital of the Anoia comarca. The town sits in a basin surrounded by low hills, with the Anoia river running along its edge. On the map, the historic centre forms a dense core, surrounded by later expansions that follow the lie of the land.
Near the river, the tanners' district known as the Rec preserves the old pattern of workshops and narrow lanes built along an irrigation channel that fed the tanneries. Beyond the old town, nineteenth- and twentieth-century streets form a more regular grid, and the A-2 motorway passes close by, linking Igualada with Barcelona and Lleida.
Igualada is known for its leather industry, for the European Balloon Festival held each summer, and for its cemetery designed by Enric Miralles and Carme Pinós, a landmark of contemporary architecture.
