Īlkhchī is a town in Iran's East Azerbaijan province, southwest of Tabriz. It stands on the broad lowland between the slopes of Mount Sahand and the eastern shore of Lake Urmia. From above it appears as a compact settlement surrounded by an intricate patchwork of fields and orchards. Roads reach out across the plain toward neighbouring towns and villages.
The shape of the town comes as much from agriculture as from building.
