Ilula is a town in the Iringa Region of Tanzania's southern highlands. On the map it's shaped by the main road that runs through it. Buildings line the route in a long band, and shorter streets branch off to either side before the town gives way to farmland.
The surroundings are rolling highland country, with cultivated plots, scattered homesteads and tracks winding over the slopes. Like many roadside towns in the region, Ilula grew as a stopping point and trading place along the highway, and its layout still reflects that linear logic.
