Inongo sits on the eastern shore of Lake Mai-Ndombe, a broad, shallow lake in the forested lowlands of the Congo Basin. On a map the town reads as a narrow band of streets along the waterline, with the lake filling much of the frame as a plain, calm surface. As the capital of Mai-Ndombe province, Inongo is the administrative centre for a large and thinly populated region where the lake and its rivers have long served as roads.
