Kikwit is the main city of Kwilu province in the south-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, set on the Kwilu River. The river is the defining feature of the map, curving past the city and separating districts on either bank, while the built-up area climbs gently away from the water across rolling ground.
The street pattern mixes more regular blocks near the older commercial centre with looser, organic neighbourhoods that have spread outward over time. Main roads leave the city toward the rest of the province and further toward Kinshasa, giving the composition several long lines that radiate from the centre.
