Lucapa lies in Lunda Norte, in the far northeast of Angola, a region shaped by rivers that drain north toward the Congo basin. On a map the town appears as a compact core of streets with roads fanning outward across wide, lightly marked terrain. Watercourses and their wooded margins cut through the surrounding land, giving the composition a loose, organic frame.
The region is known above all for diamonds. Alluvial deposits along the riverbeds of the Lundas have been worked for generations, and the name Lucapa is familiar in the mining world for that reason. Much of that activity lies outside the town itself, so the map around the centre stays calm, with a few long roads connecting it to other settlements in the province.
