Mwene lies in Lualaba province in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a province created in 2015 when the former Katanga was divided. The area sits on a high plateau of savanna and open woodland, well to the west of the provincial capital, Kolwezi. On a map the settlement appears as a modest cluster of streets and plots within a wide, lightly built landscape.
The western part of Lualaba belongs to the historic homeland of the Lunda people, and its rivers generally flow north toward the Kasai basin. From above, the most visible lines are roads and tracks linking scattered villages, and the thin, winding threads of streams, often edged by strips of denser gallery forest.
