Ipanema occupies a slim band of land in Rio de Janeiro's Zona Sul, squeezed between the open Atlantic on one side and the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas on the other. That position gives it one of the clearest shapes of any city neighbourhood: a long, straight beach to the south and a still, rounded lagoon just behind it.
The street pattern is a tight grid of blocks running parallel to the shore. Avenida Vieira Souto follows the beach, Rua Visconde de Pirajá runs through the commercial heart, and short cross streets connect sand to lagoon. At the eastern end, the rocks of Arpoador close the beach; to the west, the Jardim de Alah canal separates Ipanema from Leblon.
An Ipanema map poster also carries a cultural echo. The neighbourhood gave its name to The Girl from Ipanema, the bossa nova song that carried an image of this beach around the world in the 1960s, and its long, orderly shoreline remains one of Rio's most recognisable edges.
