Ixtapa in Jalisco sits on the flat, fertile ground inland from Banderas Bay, within the municipality of Puerto Vallarta. It should not be confused with the better-known resort of the same name on the Guerrero coast. From above, the town shows as a compact block of streets. Cultivated land presses in on every side, and the Sierra Madre foothills rise to the east.
The street pattern is simple and mostly regular, a grid of short blocks that loosens toward the edges, where houses give way to plots and farm tracks. Roads leave the centre toward the coast and the neighbouring settlements of the valley. On a map these read as a few strong lines crossing a pale, open field.
