Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo on the Pacific coast of Guerrero is really two places side by side. Zihuatanejo curls around a deep, sheltered bay, its streets climbing the hills behind a small harbour. A few kilometres northwest, Ixtapa runs along a straight open beach as a line of hotels, a marina and a golf course, backed by lagoons and mangroves.
Ixtapa was planned by the Mexican government in the 1970s as a tourism development, while Zihuatanejo grew as a fishing town and still keeps its waterfront market and beaches such as Playa La Ropa. Many people know the name from the closing scene of The Shawshank Redemption.
