Izumi lies in the northwest of Kagoshima Prefecture, on the coast of the Yatsushiro Sea close to the Kumamoto border. It is famous across Japan for its cranes: each winter, more than ten thousand of them, mostly hooded and white-naped cranes, gather on the Arasaki farmland near the coast, one of the largest such gatherings in the world.
On a map, Izumi divides into distinct parts. The central urban area has a mix of older streets and newer grid blocks, and the Kyushu Shinkansen station sits on its edge. Inland lies the Izumi-Fumoto district, a preserved samurai residential quarter with stone walls. Towards the sea, wide, flat reclaimed land is divided into rectangular fields.
