Jayapura is the capital of Papua, in the far east of Indonesia, close to the border with Papua New Guinea. The city occupies a series of narrow coastal strips and small valleys around Yos Sudarso Bay, which opens onto the Pacific. Steep, forested hills rise almost immediately behind the waterfront, so the built-up area follows the shoreline wherever there is level ground.
Under Dutch administration the town was called Hollandia. During the Second World War it became a major Allied base after American forces landed here in 1944, and General Douglas MacArthur briefly set up his headquarters in the hills nearby. Today the city's districts are spread along several bays and inlets, connected by coastal roads.

The Cyclops Mountains separate the coast from Lake Sentani and the airport to the west. The result is a delicate composition of fragments held together by the sea.
