Jiangbei, whose name means north of the river, spreads along the northern banks of the Jialing and Yangtze where they meet at the heart of Chongqing. On the map its riverfront faces the Yuzhong peninsula directly, and the district climbs inland over hilly ground in a tangle of elevated roads, interchanges and high-rise blocks that follow the terrain rather than any grid.
At the district's tip, the Chongqing Grand Theatre looks across the water towards Chaotianmen, where the two rivers join. Bridges tie Jiangbei to the rest of the city, and commercial areas such as Guanyinqiao have grown into major hubs. Chongqing's main airport carries the Jiangbei name, though it lies some distance further north.
