Johnstone Map Poster & Print
Johnstone is a town in Renfrewshire, a few miles west of Paisley. It was laid out as a planned village in the late eighteenth century by the Houstoun family, and its original centre still follows that plan: straight streets and Houston Square, a formal space with the town's church at its heart.
The town grew quickly with the cotton mills and engineering works of the Industrial Revolution, powered by the Black Cart Water that runs along its edge. Later housing estates spread outwards from the planned core, while the railway to Ayrshire and roads towards Glasgow cross the area.
A Johnstone map poster shows the neat Georgian plan inside the wider, looser pattern of the modern town. It suits people who grew up in Johnstone, families with ties to its mill history, and anyone who knows the valley between Paisley and the hills of the west.
