Kanowit is a town in central Sarawak, on the Rajang River, Malaysia's longest river, at its confluence with the Kanowit River. For much of its history the rivers were the main routes into the interior, and the town grew as a trading and administrative post along them. Boats are still an important part of travel in the area.
The town is known for Fort Emma, a wooden fort built in the 1850s during the rule of the Brooke family, the so-called White Rajahs of Sarawak. It is one of several forts they built along the rivers. The surrounding region is home to Iban communities, many of them living in traditional longhouses along the riverbanks.
A Kanowit map poster shows a compact grid of streets on the riverbank and the broad, curving Rajang beside it. In monochrome the river becomes a thick, flowing band, while the tributary adds a second line joining it. The forested land around the town fills the rest of the frame.
