Kapiri Mposhi lies in Zambia's Central Province, on the broad, gently rolling plateau north of Lusaka. On a map, the town is organised around transport. The railway lines and the main road form the strongest lines, and the station and freight yards take up a large part of the centre. Residential streets spread around them in a loose, mostly low-rise pattern.
The town is best known as the southern terminus of the TAZARA railway, built in the 1970s to link Zambia with the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. It connects here with the Zambia Railways line. Kapiri Mposhi is also where the Great North Road branches away toward the north and Tanzania.
