Kashima lies on the southwestern shore of the Ariake Sea in Saga Prefecture, Kyushu. On a map the city runs from a flat coastal strip, laced with rice fields and drainage channels, back into forested hills. The town centre gathers along the railway and the coastal road. Smaller settlements follow the rivers that come down from the uplands toward the sea.
The Ariake Sea has one of the largest tidal ranges in Japan, and at low tide broad mudflats appear along Kashima's shore. The city holds a well-known mud festival on them each year. Inland, Yūtoku Inari Shrine climbs a hillside on tall wooden stilts. It is counted among the three great Inari shrines of Japan. Kashima is also known for sake, with an old brewery street at Hizen-Hama.
