Keetmanshoop is the main town of Namibia's Karas Region, in the dry south of the country. From above, it forms a tidy grid of streets laid out on flat, open ground. The railway line and the B1 highway pass through, linking the town north to Windhoek and south toward the border with South Africa. Beyond the last blocks, the land opens into wide, sparse desert.
The town grew from a Rhenish mission station in the nineteenth century, and its old stone mission church now serves as a museum. Keetmanshoop is also known as a base for visiting the nearby Quiver Tree Forest and the Giant's Playground, a field of stacked dolerite boulders.

Rail and road junction
The railway and the B1 highway both pass through Keetmanshoop. Their long, straight lines cut across the sheet and show the town's role as a hub of the south.

The historic Rhenish mission church stands within the old core of the town. It is a reminder of the settlement's beginnings as a mission station in the nineteenth century.
