Rustenburg lies in South Africa's North West province at the western end of the Magaliesberg range. On a map the town centre forms a regular grid on the plain, and the mountains rise immediately to the south, creating a strong natural edge. Beyond the town, roads lead toward the Pilanesberg area and the mining settlements scattered across the surrounding bushveld.
The region sits on the Bushveld Complex, which holds the world's largest known reserves of platinum group metals, and the mines around Rustenburg are among the most productive anywhere. Their shafts, processing plants and tailings dams cover large areas of land. On the map they appear as extensive shapes quite unlike the town's residential blocks.
