Kelheim occupies a wedge of land at the confluence of the Altmühl and the Danube in Lower Bavaria. From above, the historic centre is an almost rectangular old town with a broad main street, its edges defined by the two rivers and the lines of the former fortifications. Newer districts spread along the valley floor, held in by steep, wooded slopes.
The Altmühl here forms part of the Main-Danube Canal, which enters the Danube at Kelheim, so the map carries both a natural river and an engineered waterway. On the Michelsberg above town stands the Befreiungshalle, a round hall of remembrance commissioned by King Ludwig I. Upstream, the Danube narrows into the Weltenburg gorge, one of the most admired stretches of the river.
