Kiryat Gat was laid out in the mid-1950s as a planned development town, and the map still shows it. Neighbourhoods sit in tidy clusters with curving residential loops, divided by wider arterial roads and green strips. The name refers to the biblical city of Gath, and the town sits in the Lakhish region, where the coastal plain begins to rise toward the hills.
