Kiryū sits at the northern edge of the Kantō plain in Gunma Prefecture, where the mountains meet the flat land. From above, the city is pressed into the space where two rivers leave the hills, the Watarase and the Kiryu. The centre fills the flat ground between them, while forested ridges close in from the north.
For centuries Kiryū was one of Japan's main silk-weaving centres, and an old saying paired it with Kyoto's Nishijin district. Parts of the central district still keep old merchant houses and sawtooth-roofed weaving mills along narrow streets. On the map this area appears as a fine, tightly woven grid next to the broader modern roads.
