Sano is in southwestern Tochigi Prefecture, on the northern edge of the Kanto Plain. The southern part of the city is flat and densely built. Streets gather around the railway station and the older commercial district, and farmland lies between the neighbourhoods. After mergers in 2005, the city boundary reaches far to the north, into forested mountains where only a few roads follow the valleys.
Within Japan, Sano is best known for Sano ramen, a local style of noodle soup made with hand-stretched noodles, and for Sano Yakuyoke Daishi, a temple that many people visit at New Year. The Tohoku Expressway runs through the city, and its interchange shows up as a looping knot of ramps on the southern plain.
