Kitale lies in the highlands of western Kenya, in Trans Nzoia County, with Mount Elgon rising to the northwest. From above, the town is compact: a central grid of streets surrounded by residential areas that thin out quickly into cultivated land. Long straight roads run out across the fields toward other towns in the region.
The area around Kitale is one of Kenya's most productive farming districts, known particularly for maize, and the town serves as its market and service centre. It is also a base for travel to Mount Elgon and Saiwa Swamp, two of the region's national parks.
