Mbale lies in eastern Uganda, within reach of the Kenyan border, at the western foot of Mount Elgon. On a map the town spreads across relatively level ground while the escarpment of the Wanale ridge rises sharply to the east, a steep wall with only a few roads climbing it. Streams run down from the mountain through the town and out onto the plain.
The centre has a compact grid of commercial streets, with markets, offices and the taxi park gathered close together, while residential districts extend outward along the main roads toward Tororo, Soroti and Kapchorwa. Mbale is also home to the Islamic University in Uganda, whose campus forms one of the larger institutional sites in town.
The slopes of Elgon around Mbale produce much of Uganda's Bugisu arabica coffee, and the Bamasaba people are known for the imbalu circumcision ceremony held in even-numbered years.
