Knysna is organised around its lagoon. The Knysna River widens into a large tidal estuary before it squeezes out to the Indian Ocean through a narrow gap between two sandstone cliffs, known as the Heads. Seen from above, the water takes up the centre of the map, and the town lines its northern shore with streets that climb into the wooded hills behind.
Out in the lagoon lie Leisure Isle and Thesen Island, each linked to the shore by causeway, with their own small networks of roads. The town is known for the indigenous forests of the surrounding district and for oysters farmed in the estuary, and it is one of the best-known stops along the Garden Route in the Western Cape.
A Knysna map poster has a strong natural composition. The lagoon forms a pale open shape in the middle, the Heads mark a clear point where it meets the sea, and the streets thread along the shoreline and up the slopes. It is a place where the water does most of the drawing.
