Ko Samui is roughly oval, and its road network is simple to read from above. One main road circles the island near the shore, and most of the villages, resorts and beaches hang off it. The interior is steep and forested, crossed by only a few thin tracks. The result is a clear ring of lines around a quiet, almost empty centre.
The east coast carries the longest beaches, Chaweng and Lamai, where the streets thicken into small grids between the ring road and the sand. Nathon, on the west coast, is the island's administrative town and an older ferry port facing the mainland of Surat Thani province. The airport sits in the north-east corner, close to the shore.
