Nakhon Si Thammarat sits on the eastern side of southern Thailand, between the mountains of the Nakhon Si Thammarat range and the Gulf of Thailand. Its most distinctive feature from above is its shape. The city is long and narrow, built along an ancient sand ridge that runs north to south, with the main road following that ridge through the city.
It is one of the oldest cities in Thailand and was an important centre of trade and Buddhism long before the rise of Bangkok. At its heart is Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, whose tall white chedi is a national landmark. Beyond the ridge, the land falls away to rice fields, canals and waterways leading toward the coast. The city is also known for nang talung shadow puppetry, a tradition of southern Thailand. The long central spine and the lower land on either side make the map easy to read at a glance.
