Kobo lies in the North Wollo zone of the Amhara region, in northern Ethiopia, near the boundary with Tigray. The town stands on the main road running north from Addis Ababa toward Mekelle, and from above its form follows that route: a long central street lined with buildings, with a looser network of residential lanes spreading to either side.
To the east of the highland escarpment, Kobo sits beside a wide, relatively flat plain, part of the broader lowland corridor that has been the focus of irrigation and agricultural development projects. The surrounding landscape combines cultivated fields on the plain with steeper, more rugged terrain rising toward the highlands to the west.
