Kohima is the capital of Nagaland in northeast India. It is built along ridges and slopes in the Naga Hills, at an elevation well above the plains. Because the terrain is so steep, there is no grid here. Roads follow the contours, switching back and forth down the hillsides, while houses and neighbourhoods sit in terraces wherever the slope allows.
The town is best known for the Battle of Kohima in 1944, one of the key battles of the Second World War in Asia. The Kohima War Cemetery on Garrison Hill, which includes the site of the famous tennis court, preserves that history. Every December, the nearby Kisama heritage village hosts the Hornbill Festival, which brings together Naga tribes.

The war cemetery on Garrison Hill marks where the 1944 fighting was most intense. On the map, it is a small, carefully laid-out space in the middle of the ridge-top town.
