Kompienga lies in the Est region of Burkina Faso, close to the border with Togo. Its defining feature is the reservoir created by the Kompienga dam, a hydroelectric project on a tributary of the Oti River. From above, the lake spreads in long branching arms across flat savanna, and the town sits close to its shore.
The dam was completed in the late 1980s and supplies electricity to the national grid. The reservoir has also made the area a centre for fishing. The town is spread out and low-rise, with dirt roads linking homes, fields and landing points along the water. The protected wildlife areas of eastern Burkina Faso lie not far away.
A Kompienga map poster is unusual in that the water does most of the design work. The irregular outline of the reservoir, with its inlets and islands, stands against the sparse lines of roads and tracks. The result looks closer to a natural chart than a city plan.

The dam is a short, straight structure holding back a very large body of water. On the map it is one of the few precise man-made lines in a mostly natural landscape.

Beyond the town, thin roads and tracks cross open land to fields, villages and the shoreline. Their loose, branching pattern leaves the frame light and open.
