Kara, once known as Lama-Kara, is the main city of northern Togo and the capital of the Kara region. It lies along the Kara river, and its map combines broad, straight avenues with looser residential streets. The river gives the city a natural line through its landscape, while roads head out toward the surrounding hills and villages.
The city grew considerably in the second half of the twentieth century, when it was developed as a regional centre, and its planned layout still shows that period. Kara is the heartland of the Kabye people, and each year it hosts the Evala, a traditional wrestling festival that marks initiation for young men and draws visitors from across the country.
